WHO WE ARE

Cucchitella-Sciacca-Shop

It is the official online store of the " Bar Nuovo Fiore " of Sciacca owned by the Lo Monaco brothers.

Salvatore and Calogero Lo Monaco are two boys who grew up in pastry shops and various confectionery workshops in the city of Sciacca. As they grew up, they acquired more and more skills in the pastry shops of Sciacca (AG) . Both work in different laboratories; however, they soon decided to join forces because they realized they were capable of opening and managing their own pastry shop. At the age of twenty, in 1993 , they founded the pastry shop Bar Nuovo Fiore. In the south of Sicily there is a city bathed by the sea, Sciacca. This is the most beautiful and populous city in the entire province of Agrigento. In Sciacca, the history of the Lo Monaco brothers, Calogero and Salvatore , and of the " Cucchitella " is intertwined. This is the typical and exclusive dessert of the city, which is produced and worked by hand following the rules of the typical Sicilian tradition by all the pastry chefs of Sciacca.

History of the Cucchitella of Sciacca

Cucchitella was prepared for the first time around 1380 by the cloistered nuns of the Monastery of Santa Maria dell'Itria, known as Badia Grande di Sciacca and founded in 1371. The nuns, at one time, were the only ones who tried their hand at making sweets; they sold them only to wealthy gentlemen who could afford them so as to be able to provide for their own needs and the sustenance of the monastery.

Cucchitella is a morsel made of almond paste filled with "zuccata" or Sicilian green courgette jam. Almond paste is a mixture of flour, sugar, and ground almonds. Zucchinata, on the other hand, is a jam made of exclusively Sicilian green courgettes, which are boiled and then seasoned with sugar until they become a very sweet jam rich in properties. Once they have been manually shaped into a "spoon" shape, from which they take their name, the cucchitelle are baked; as soon as they are cooked, they are left to cool, and then half covered with icing or powdered sugar . However, there are new modern variations that are very popular with tourists and Sicilians that you can find on the " Dessert of Sicily " page of the official website . A delicious appetite....
